Beachy waves are perfect for prom night

JUST in time for grad parties and prom, artfully undone braids and loose, windswept curls evoke lazy summer days and beach bonfire nights. The simple, pretty look can be flip-flop casual, or a romantic addition to a floorlength gown.

JUST in time for grad parties and prom, artfully undone braids and loose, windswept curls evoke lazy summer days and beach bonfire nights.

The simple, pretty look can be flip-flop casual, or a romantic addition to a floorlength gown.

"That's what's in right now," said Ruth Scheepers, owner of North Vancouver salon Hairsoda. "The braids are very in, and loose, quick updos. It musn't look too neat."

Scheepers uses products made specifically for the elegant beach-bum style, such as a texturizer that acts like saltwater on hair.

"You basically take some of the beach texturizer product and scrunch (the hair) up," said Hairsoda stylist Leanna Musgrave.

The style can be easily done at home, said Scheepers, who recommends using a wave curling iron or flat iron on dry hair and gently twisting the iron to get big, loose curls. At the salon, the curls are set under the dryer; at home, you can use a blow dryer.

This fashion works especially well with naturally wavy hair. To prevent your hair from looking actually windswept, Scheepers recommends using an anti-frizz product. The beach texturizer Scheepers uses also makes hair look smooth.

For a more formal updo, try a loose braid tucked into a bun at the side of the head, or wrapped all the way around.

Scheepers uses Hair Resort Spray and Hair Resort Beach Texturiser from stylist Kevin Murphy to achieve this beachy look.
