EMBRACING the modernist approach means clearing away the debris of accumulated purchases that have crept into the home.

In this delightfully tonguein-cheek presentation aimed at the hipster crowd, Molly Jane Quinn touches on all aspects of a contemporary lifestyle and views it through a pair of retro cool glasses. Quinn discusses the modern home, from the hard, uncomfortable Eames stools to the hidden walk-in closet where you can store all the items that would otherwise ruin the home's sparse esthetic.

Growing out of the popular website UnhappyHipsters. com, the book looks at the home in three sections: Interiors, Exteriors and Accessories. Photographs and drawings illustrate the items discussed, all presented in a clean and orderly layout. Spread throughout are profiles of leading Modernists like architect Frank Gehry, product designer Philippe Starck and furniture designer Marcel Wanders.

With the right attitude even children can be worked into the modern hipster lifestyle. Possible items include toys with an ironic twist, miniature versions of designer furniture, and a minimal amount of games that can be neatly stacked into a single shelf.
