TEENAGERS who want to get in touch with their artistic side can head to one of the workshops being hosted this fall by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council.
The organization is offering youth programming for the first time and is excited to attract a new demographic to art, said spokeswoman Claire Halpern.
"One of the main reasons that we're doing this is that parents and teens have been asking for it, and asking for artists to teach them hard and soft art skills," she said.
There will be two Saturday workshops for teens, each led by local artists. The first will teach teens how to express themselves using acrylic paints and the second will focus on forms of printmaking without any heavy machinery. Each of the workshops is geared to kids ages 12 to 16 and will have a maximum class size of 10, leaving opportunities for oneon-one time with instructors.
Halpern said she hopes teens who participate in the workshops will learn something new.
Jeri Engen, who is teaching the printmaking class, said she hopes to motivate teens to communicate visually.
"You don't have to be a great artist but to be able to express yourself visually is important. What I'd like to show the teens is that they don't need a printing press, they don't need a lot of fancy equipment to do printmaking," she said.
Engen has 11 years' experience teaching art. She wants to show students four to five different printmaking techniques such as silk screening and stamp making.
