A backpack is the final touch

TO put the finishing touches on any new school outfit, you're going to need a backpack

Bright colours are a perennial favourite, and plaid patterns are definitely in vogue for 2011.

But while style and colour are what usually influences kids' choices, it's important to examine any new bag before purchase to make sure it's appropriate for your child size and the amount of weight they will be carrying.

Too large a pack, or an uncomfortable one, can be harmful for young people's backs and posture. Generally speaking, a child should not be carrying more than 10 to 20 per cent of their body weight on their backs.

Look for easily adjustable straps at the shoulders, waist and chest. The horizontal straps help keep the pack properly positioned. It's also a good idea to get a backpack with a number of specialized pockets, pouches and so forth.

Space for a water bottle, a digital music player and a key ring are popular choices. Many modern bags also have wheels and an extendable handle.
