Waking up in the morning to find that a major household appliance has malfunctioned can be a harsh reality for homeowners. Another reality is that appliances like refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers and washers and dryers aren’t just objects in our homes – they are an integral part of our daily lives. And when they malfunction – our world of routines is disrupted and the need to replace the appliance carries a sense of urgency for families.

The reality of shopping for appliances in today’s market is that these purchases are not like buying clothing at a sale price. Savvy consumers should not be replacing these purchases with the latest model or style next year unless they have an unlimited budget.

"Life expectancy is one of the important considerations when selecting an appliance,” says Julie Hale, General Manager, Edmonds Appliances.

Hale points out that while more price competitive appliances brands have entered the market, consumers must also consider the cost alongside the anticipated longevity of the new appliance. Fewer manufacturers are making major appliances built to last 20-plus years.

“Manufacturers have had to choose a path- providing accessible price points, or building appliances that are really built for longevity,” Hale says.

“At Edmonds Appliances, our team will work with each customer to uncover your family’s needs, longevity requirements, and budget for a single appliance or a whole home renovation,” Hale says, noting that customers cannot be swayed by commission-driven sales staff, because Edmonds does not operate on a traditional commission structure.

"It's really about finding the best fit for yourself and your family for the house that you are renting, re-selling or plan to live in for some time," Hale says.

She says the best strategy is to figure out if the investment is worth it, and ask yourself: will you be moving in the next five years?

While Edmonds Appliances originated in Burnaby, the company now has stores on West 2nd at Cambie, and in West Vancouver on 15th Street. Each showroom displays both affordable and premium brands that past customers have found to offer best-in-class value, with the lowest level of repairs and the best levels of performance.

Because who likes having a major appliance need a major repair?

Edmonds Appliances has been in business for 43 years, and while they have a slightly smaller retail footprint than some other retailers, the company has all of the major appliance brands and categories covered.

"Hands down- we can handle a dishwasher- or your whole home,” Hale says. “Fridges, stoves, laundry, dishwashers, to hood fans to microwaves.”

Hale adds that Fall is one of the best times to purchase because manufacturers have some of their most aggressive promotions at this time – useful to know in case of an appliance mishap during the busy holiday season.
