Sunshine and hot weather are in the forecast as students and teachers return to school this week.

According to Environment Canada, sun and clear skies are expected from Tuesday to Friday with a high of 24C and a low of 13C.

The weather agency also announced in a special weather statement daytime and overnight temperatures are forecasted to be five to 10C above seasonal temperatures this year and will peak on Wednesday and Thursday.

The rise in temperature across Metro Vancouver is caused by an upper ridge of high pressure that will draw warm air northward from the United States.

Saturday and Sunday will cool down a bit with a mix of sun and clouds, while clear skies will return on Monday with a high of 22C and a low of 13C.

People are reminded to drink plenty of water, stay in a cool place and to schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.
