Recycling your cork is always a good idea.

Recycling your cork is always a good idea. But did you know there are hundreds of ingenious ways to use cork?

Here are some really cute ideas for ways that cork can be used around the household, everything from simple fridge magnets to kitchen trivets that all can be made in minutes.

Mini magnets/potters
I first saw this idea in a store and thought that these would be easy to make at home – and they were. Put aside a few of your favourite corks and hollow them out with a little pocketknife.

Add a tiny amount of soil and insert your succulent plant. Glue a small, flat magnet on the backside of the cork and attach to a metal surface.

The nice thing about this idea is that you can make them with real or artificial succulents. If you choose to make them with real succulents, don’t forget to water them.

Key chains
Corks are wonderful for key chains. They’re also wonderful for boat lovers in case the keys happen to go overboard! Simply insert a screw eye into the top of the cork and attach a key ring. You can even add a label to the cork with a marker.

Jewelry storage
This is a great idea for the inside of a bathroom cupboard. Glue a line of corks together along the top inside edge of your bathroom cupboard. Use small, hooked screw eyes to hang your jewelry such as necklaces, rings and bracelets.

Photo storage
I love this idea for a kid’s room. Glue a yardstick of corks vertically up a small wall in a child’s room for them to attach their favorite photos. This idea is also great for home offices.

Kitchen trivet

Probably one of the most versatile uses for cork is handling hot items. There are many different variations for this idea but my favorite is to use a small, square photo frame as the base. Insert your corks ahead of time to be sure they all fit and then glue them all in with your glue gun. Placing them in pairs is a nice pattern.
