North Vancouver residents Daryl and Tolga Nemutlu hold their baby girl who was born at Lions Gate Hospital on Jan. 1.
North Vancouver residents Daryl and Tolga Nemutlu welcomed their first child into the world – and the first baby born on the North Shore in 2021 – in the late afternoon on New Year’s Day, according to Vancouver Coastal Health.

The yet-to-be-named baby girl was born at 2:55 p.m. on Jan. 1 at Lions Gate Hospital.

“We’re happy – we’re over the moon,” Daryl Nemutlu told the News.

The happy parents said they were grateful their baby girl was the North Shore’s first child born after what had been such a tumultuous year.

“We feel very lucky. Very special,” said Daryl.

The couple, who reside in the Capilano neighbourhood, wanted to thank the staff and caregivers at Midwifery Care North Shore and Lions Gate Hospital for “helping us meet our little girl,” said Daryl.

The Nemutlus’s daughter weighed 5 lb. 3 oz. at birth, according to the health authority.
