The North Vancouver figure skater was still winning international championships when she turned the soil on Karen Magnussen Arena

2023 marks the 50-year anniversary of the beginning of construction on the Karen Magnussen Community Recreation Centre in Lynn Valley.

Here is a picture of Karen Magnussen, alongside District of North Vancouver Mayor Ron Andrews, breaking ground on the construction site in 1973. That same year, Magnussen won gold at the World Figure Skating Championships, was named an Officer to the Order of Canada and went on to retire from competitive skating.

The centre, then known as Karen Magnussen Arena, opened the following year and remains an important community hub for North Vancouverites.
