North Shore sisters Nancy and Marjory Hewett – whose family once ran a second-hand shop on Lonsdale Avenue – each distinguished themseleves with their service during the Second World War.
Their contributions were detailed Women & Wartime: Defending North Vancouver, 1939-45, an exhibit that examined life in North Vancouver during the Second World War.
Initial efforts to track down relatives were fruitless. However, following an article about the exhibit, cousin Patricia Turner visited the Community History Centre in Lynn Valley.
“She shared memories of her father and Nancy serving together in the military, along with stories of Hewlett family businesses in North Vancouver,” wrote historical researcher Christine Hagemoen. “The archives team was thrilled to meet Patricia and learn more about Nancy’s contributions to the war effort.”
Women & Wartime is available for public viewing Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community History Centre, 3203 Institute Road.
