North Van's Burrard-Yarrows Corp. paid $42 million to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for this updated yard that arrived in 1981

Here is a photo of a new dry dock for Burrard-Yarrows Corp. arriving in North Vancouver from Japan on Aug. 24, 1981.

In the late 1970s, with the shipbuilding industry declining and modern shipping technology evolving, the company was forced to update its old yard which was built in the 1920s. Hoping to salvage the hopes of the yard, the $42 million project was taken on by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Hiroshima.

Within a year the new yard had once again become the busiest in the country. This success did not last, however, with the company closing for good in 1993.
