Time Traveller: 50 years ago, an old church was on the move in North Vancouver

First built in 1899 and still standing today, this building has been a church, scout hall, recital hall and art studio

50 years ago, the old St. John’s Church was moved from 13th Street to 3rd Street, next to Presentation House. There it was restored and became Anne MacDonald Hall.

The church was first built in 1899, and was later used as a scout hall after a new church was built for the congregation in 1909. In 1973 the building was donated to the city, which decided to turn it into a recital hall.

The building is named after Anne MacDonald, who founded the North Vancouver Arts Council and helped establish Presentation House Arts Centre. It opened in December of 1978.
