A group of Richmond army cadets raised an impressive 231 pounds of groceries for the food bank, more than double its target.

Richmond’s 2381 “BCR (Irish Fusiliers)” Army Cadets; food drive the week of Dec. 11 to 18 was a concentrated effort to raise 100 pounds of food to support the Richmond Food Bank.

As the cadets were not able to gather in person, the unit took an innovative approach of gathering donations virtually.

Cadets weighed their donations at home and shared a photo of their contributions with each other online.

Volunteers then collected the donations from cadets’ homes via contactless pickup.

At the end of the project, they more than doubled the initial goal and delivered it all to the Richmond Food Bank last week.

“The food bank is a critical resource in our community. The need to access it has likely been further increased by the economic impacts of the pandemic,” said Capt. Jeff Ng, commanding officer of 2381.

“I’m extremely proud of the contributions made by our cadets. The generosity that they have displayed has exemplified leading positive, purpose-driven action to serve others.

“We are all members of this community. This is our home; as leaders, we have a responsibility to serve and give back to it.”

2381 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps is a non-profit youth organization providing life skills and leadership training to Canadians ages 12-18.
