THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities from various community organizations, made available through Volunteer North Shore, a service of North Shore Community Resources Society.
Volunteer: The Lynn Valley Community Association needs volunteers for Lynn Valley Day, May 26. This is a major community event and a variety of positions are available.
Bus driver: Churchill House Retirement Community is looking for a bus driver to take elderly residents on short outings to local North Shore areas, including shopping malls, and assist with the loading and unloading of walkers and other shopping items. A Class 4 license is required.
Volunteer: AIDS Vancouver offers volunteers diverse opportunities to learn, gain new skills and experiences, meet new people and get involved in the community. Volunteer positions range from individual to group positions. Be part of their board of directors, their grocery or counselling team or volunteer in their library to name a few of the many volunteer positions available. Visit www.aidsvancouver.org.
Phone line volunteer: Volunteers will be responding to calls from refugee claimants as required, and providing basic emergency housing placements as well as basic information about the claim process, legal aid, transportation, food settlement services, etc.
Mentor: You will be matched with a newcomer and will meet with them for a few hours each week for up to three months. Meetings are arranged whenever and wherever it works for both of you, so this commitment is very flexible and easy to work into your day. In the course of your mentorship, you might practise interviewing, attend networking sessions, talk about professional development and discuss workplace culture.
