A group of Blueridge elementary students have banded together to help save the Richmond Auto Mall rabbits.

According to a written statement, a news story detailing the challenges faced by the rabbit population prompted teacher Glen Wyatt to incorporate the issue into a critical thinking project for his class. His students were strongly affected by the story and took action in an effort to raise funds in support of a potential rabbit sanctuary.

Five girls from the class plus three of their friends from the other Grade 6 class made bracelets and sold them for three consecutive Wednesdays after school for 40 minutes. They called their campaign Bracelets for Bunnies and raised $280.

"It is amazing that 10 and 11 year olds decided to empower themselves and try to make a difference and help save the bunnies," says parent Jackie Leone. "They would like to issue an informal challenge to other kids to step up and use their voice and their talents to help fix a problem."
