CAPILANO University student Abbid Jaffer was awarded a scholarship for his commitment to supporting community members who struggle with mental health issues.

According to a written statement, Jaffer was one of 12 recipients of the Joint Diversity and Training Trust Scholarship for 2011, which recognizes individuals who've played a significant role in diversity initiatives in their school and/or community. The scholarship was awarded by the Overwaitea Food Group and UFCW Local 1518.

North Shore Volunteers For Seniors is among 19 organizations in the running for $60,000 in prize money in the 14th annual Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services. The awards recognize and encourage best practices in non-profit management and are intended to increase public confidence and support for Canada's nonprofit sector. They're administered by the Fraser Institute on behalf of the Donner Canadian Foundation, and will be presented in November at a celebration in Toronto. The top organization in each of seven categories of social service delivery will be awarded $5,000, while $20,000 will be presented to the highest performer overall. North Shore Volunteers For Seniors was named in the Services for Seniors category. In addition, the $5,000 Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-Profit Management will be presented to a non-profit organization with a consistent record of excellence and innovation in the management and delivery of services.
