North Vancouver elementary school holds drive-in grad ceremony

Upper Lynn students treated to outdoor screening of their grad video

It was a mix of old-fashioned fun and new physically distanced technology as Grade 7 students from North Vancouver’s Upper Lynn Elementary celebrated their graduation to high school with a virtual drive-in ceremony yesterday evening.

Students and their families first took part in a short car parade around their Lynn Valley neighbourhood before parking their rides at the back of the school for an outdoor screening of a graduation video.

The video was shot over the past month as students in small, staggered groups took it in turns to mimic what their typical Grade 7 grad ceremony would have been like. The clips were then edited together to make a complete virtual ceremony, with the big reveal coming at a 50-car drive-in showing.

Global News anchor Chris Gailus greeted the students upon their arrival at the school and acted as host for the evening.
