A founding member of North Shore Rescue and a founding partner of Douglas & McIntyre Publishers were among 15 appointees to the Order of British Columbia, announced May 31.
Dave Brewer, who joined the organization that would become North Shore Rescue in 1965, was honoured for his: “leadership, vision and determination,” in contributing to one of the world’s most effective search and rescue organizations.
Initially trained in civil defense rather than bush and mountain rescue, Brewer worked to establish new search methods and to petition the provincial government for more support. Brewer participated in more than 600 rescues and developed provincial and federal search and rescue standards.
“It became a passion and some people said it was almost an obsession,” he said, speaking to the North Shore News in 2017. “I help where I can and I love to share the expertise developed over the years at North Shore Rescue.”
The province also honoured North Van publisher Scott McIntyre for helping Douglas & McIntyre earn: “an international reputation for the quality and subject range of its books, including First Nations history and art.”
“These exceptional recipients are pillars of our communities, who have demonstrated excellence and distinction in their fields,” stated Lt. Gov. Janet Austin in a press release.
Since its inception, 447 British Columbians have received the order.
