North Shore nurses awarded

THREE North Vancouver nurses were among the 45 recognized for excellence at the recent annual College of Registered Nurses of B.C. awards ceremony at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

THREE North Vancouver nurses were among the 45 recognized for excellence at the recent annual College of Registered Nurses of B.C. awards ceremony at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

According to a written statement, both Jacqueline Forman, a clinical nurse educator at St. Paul's Hospital's cardiac surgery intensive care unit, and Khairrunnissa Rhemtulla, regional manager, clinical education, Vancouver Coastal Health, received an Award of Excellence in Nursing Education. Mandy Tanner, a palliative nurse clinician, North Shore Home and Community Care, Vancouver Coastal Health, was honoured with an Award of Excellence in Nursing Practice.

Three North Shore residents were recently honoured with gold medals from the Royal Conservatory. North Vancouver residents Nicole Linaksita won a 2011 gold medal for scoring the top mark in Canada on her Licentiate examination in piano and Lauren Wilkinson won a gold medal for scoring the top mark in British Columbia on her Grade 2 voice examination. West Vancouver resident Anja Rabus won a 2011 gold medal for scoring the top mark in the province on her Grade 9 violin examination. Her teacher, Mary Sokol-Brown, is based in North Vancouver.

The musicians received their awards at a ceremony in Vancouver earlier this spring at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Linaksita was a featured performer.

The board of directors of the West Vancouver Community Foundation recently awarded $89,415 in community grants for 2012.

For the annual grant cycle, the foundation awarded $54,250 to 22 non-profit organizations. They include: Avalon Recovery Society; BOOKtopia; Canadian Chinese Outreach Committee; Canucks Autism Network; Children of the Street Society; Harmony Arts Festival; Junior Achievement of B.C.; Kay Meek Centre; Lighthouse Park Preservation Society; Lions Gate Hospital Foundation; musica intima; North Shore Meals on Wheels Society; North Shore Hospice Society; North Shore Lifeboat Society; North Shore Palliative Care Program; North Shore Schizophrenia Society; Pandora's Vox Vocal Ensemble Society; West Vancouver Community Arts Council; West Vancouver Family Place; West Vancouver Streamkeeper Society; West Vancouver Track & Field Club; and West Vancouver Youth Band.

In celebration of the District of West Vancouver's 100th anniversary, the foundation awarded 12 Centennial Grants in the amount of $10,165 supporting activities celebrating the milestone. Recipients include: West Vancouver District Student Council; West Vancouver Community Centres Society; Theatre West Van; West Vancouver Police Department; North Shore Volunteers for Seniors; Kay Meek Centre; West Vancouver Seniors Activity Centre; West Vancouver Youth Band; Point Atkinson Light Station; and West Vancouver Track & Field Club.

Finally, to create a legacy project for West Vancouver's Centennial Year, the foundation awarded $25,000 to the District of West Vancouver to establish a series of 12 interpretive panels to be placed along the Seawalk in perpetuity, to interpret the history of West Vancouver's Centennial. The grant was made possible by the Holly and Beke Burne Fund.

North Vancouver resident Noah Virjee, 8, raised more than $1,500 for the MakeA-Wish Foundation of British Columbia through two successful lemonade stands at Maplewood Farms and Whole Foods at the Village in Park Royal. He tripled his original fundraising goal.
