Grouse Grind to open tomorrow

Trail to close again May 22 for seasonal safety maintenance

Hikers, trail runners, and those who love being out of breath are in luck: the Grouse Grind is officially opening for the season tomorrow morning.

Grinders will be able to take to the trail starting May 2, with daily hours from 6:15 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A news release from Metro Vancouver notes the trail has been closed because of snow and ice since Jan. 19, but recent rain and warmer temperatures have cleared most of it away, making it suitable for hikers.

“We know this is welcome news for Grouse Grinders throughout the region who have been looking forward to the great workouts and breathtaking views that Grouse Mountain Regional Park provides,” stated Heather Deal, chair of Metro’s regional parks committee.

Last year, Grouse Mountain, which includes the Grouse Grind, received official park land status after it was handed over to Metro and renamed Grouse Mountain Regional Park after being under the jurisdiction of the Greater Vancouver Water District for more than 85 years.

“Enjoy the grind, but please keep in mind it’s still quite cold at the top of the mountain – be sure to wear sensible footwear and pack extra layers so that you’re prepared for cold, snowy conditions,” Deal stated in the release.

Starting May 22, the trail will be closed for a few weeks so seasonal safety maintenance, including rock scaling and removal of dangerous trees, can be undertaken.
