Mary-Sue Atkinson and Leanne Gilhuis sign cards to Canada's finance minister during an event at St. David's United Church in West Vancouver on Nov. 13.
Atkinson is the outreach chairwoman at the church and was also one of 100 people across the country chosen to attend a two-day workshop event in September in Montreal as part of the campaigning and advocacy organization ONE, which aims to end extreme poverty and preventable disease particularly in Africa, according to its website. The event included a townhall meeting with Bill Gates, U2's lead singer Bono, and the prime minister.
Participants in the recent church event sang U2 songs (Bono founded ONE) and signed cards for Finance Minister Bill Morneau, asking him to increase foreign aid funding in 2017 to help end global poverty.
Atkinson also spoke at the event about her experience in Montreal and what she learned during the workshops there.
