VPD officers arrested Derek Sangris after a 12-year-old girl reported she had been sexually assaulted at Granville Island on August 13.

Charges of sexual assault and sexual interference have been approved against a man recently arrested for the alleged groping of a minor in Vancouver.

Officers with the Vancouver Police Department arrested Derek Sangris, 42, on Tuesday (Aug. 24), after a 12-year-old girl reported that she had been groped and sexually assaulted while at the Granville Island Public Market on Aug. 13. The victim contacted police after VPD released information about a series of gropings that occurred around False Creek on Aug. 17, according to a recent VPD release.

The BC Prosecution Service has approved charges of sexual assault and sexual interference against Sangris, related to the Aug. 13 incident. The VPD is continuing to investigate the possibility of any connections between that incident and other unsolved gropings in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call VPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at 604-717-0601.
