The Vancouver Canadians baseball club will begin their 2021 season by playing their home games in Hillsboro, Ore., the club said today (March 29).

The Canadians, the only Canadian team in the six-team High-A West League established this year by Minor League Baseball, originally said it may consider starting at home in Vancouver (at Nat Bailey Stadium) if the border travel issue can be resolved.

The club added it is not ruling out returning to Vancouver at some point during the season if the border situation clears up.

“The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club is still hopeful to open our gates at Nat Bailey Stadium to welcome our great fans back to the ballpark in 2021,” the statement said. “However, with the continuing closure of the Canada-U.S. border, we have made the proactive decision to start our 2021 season in Hillsboro, OR.”

The club also said they will communicate directly with ticket holders to discuss “flexible ticketing options.”

This is the first year the Canadians will be playing in the long-season High-A format, starting on May 4 on the road against Tri-Cities.
