Richmond baker competes in CTV cake challenge show

“Everyone was friendly… even though we’re going against each other, but we had very long filming hours,” said Ramxy Wong.

Not everyone can say they get to check off a cake competition on their bucket list, but one Richmond baker is doing just that.

Richmond resident Ramxy Wong is one of seven cake bakers in Western Canada taking part in CTV’s Cross Country Cake Off competition.

Wong, a self-taught baker, said making cakes on a TV show allowed her to “check off” an item on her bucket list.

And it was all thanks to a friend who pushed her to join.

“I was hesitant at first, but I said I’d try it out because it’s been something I wanted to do for awhile,” said Wong.

“I know there’s a lot of submissions, and I wasn’t keeping my hopes up. But for some reason they chose me, so I was excited.”

Wong told the Richmond News that baking and competing while filming was a lot of fun but stressful.

“Everyone was friendly… even though we’re going against each other, but we had very long filming hours,” she said.

“It’s really like self-discovery and knowing yourself and… when you’re there it’s a whole new experience of doing what you love to do in front of the camera and other talented people.”

When asked how she got into baking, Wong said she became interested while working as a cake decorator at Dairy Queen during high school.

Since then, she been baking for six years from her kitchen and said baking cakes will remain a “passion hobby” for now.

“I think I will just pursue this as a hobby for now because I don’t want it to be something that I would hate doing if it was to turn into a full-time job. It’s still in the air.”
