Vancouver’s Providence Health Care Society has filed suit in B.C. Supreme Court against a U.K. woman to recover care costs now standing at $66,063.

A notice of civil claim filed in court July 5 said Robina Gilpin received emergency care at St. Paul’s Hospital June 30, 2019 and later transferred to a ward. She was in hospital until July 9, 2019.

As B.C.’s Medical Services Plan did not cover Gilpin, she had to sign a rate schedule and payment agreement, the claim said. Gilpin agreed to pay non-resident rates as well as 2% interest per month.

On July 31, 2019, Providence sent Gilpin a $53,375 invoice. It was also sent to Global Excel Management, which was identified as a third-party insurer with whom Gilpin had a policy, the claim said.

On Jan. 31, 2020, Global paid $20,610, advising it was the proper amount due and payable, the claim said.

The claim said the amount of debt as of June 29 is $66,063.

Providence operates St. Paul’s Hospital and other facilities in Metro Vancouver.
