Letter: West Van's new bike lane promise not sufficient enough

The District of West Vancouver needs to be offering more than just a lick of paint, argues resident

West Vancouver is soon to introduce a new, painted bike lane on Marine Drive.

Re: West Vancouver to welcome new bike lane to Marine Drive

Dear Editor,

A recent 13-year study of a dozen cities concluded that painted bike lanes like the one just approved for the District of West Vancouver offer vulnerable road users no safety benefit.

Cyclists and others need, and deserve, infrastructure that provides physical separation and protection from motorists.

Plastic flex posts and a few stencils painted on the road are literally useless.

Unfortunately, the District of West Vancouver is unlikely to provide proper infrastructure because doing so would require taking away road space from vehicles, a political non-starter. Perhaps one day West Vancouver’s mayor and council will demonstrate the needed backbone and leadership.

In the meantime, people outside of vehicles will continue to get hurt at the expense of driver convenience.

James Glave,
Vancouver
