Latest Stawamus Chief rockfall leads to climbing closures

Main hiking trails open after July 27 incident, but some rock climbing areas closed as geotechnical assessments are being conducted: BC Parks.

Another rockfall on the Stawamus Chief woke residents early July 27, exactly one month after the last rockfall from the Grand Wall at the Chief.

This time, the rockfall happened in the Grand Wall/Western Dihedrals area of the Grand Wall, BC Parks said.

The provincial ministry tells The Chief its personnel are currently evaluating the extent of the rockfall through geotechnical assessment.

In terms of how this might impact recreationalists, the main hiking trails — such as the Backside Trail — are not impacted but the climbing and bouldering areas in the affected zone have been closed.

Areas that are now closed can be seen here.
