A Vancouver man stayed up until 2:30 a.m. on Monday to photograph the northern lights.

A Metro Vancouver man stayed up till the early morning hours to capture the northern lights on camera.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a ‘severe’ level 4G storm was on display Sunday across Canada, showing off the aurora borealis.

Harry Yau knew the event was happening and made sure his camera was charged and ready for the show.

“When I was looking at the weather charts, it was probably clearing up after 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.,” he says.

Positioned at Spanish Banks Beach, to try and avoid the city lights, he waited.

At 2:23 a.m., the clouds started to clear in the northwest direction and he was able to snap the shot.

"You can faintly see the pillars with the naked eye, but mostly viewable through a camera," says Yau.

This isn’t the first time Yau has captured the northern lights. He’s photographed them six times and enjoys his hobby.

“Once you get hooked on it, then you just keep getting hooked on it. You always want to see the best show, right?”

He shared the image on Reddit.

“Once you see it... you want to see it more and more,” he says.
