HALIFAX — The remaining wildfire evacuation orders for communities on the northwest shore of Conception Bay in Newfoundland have been lifted.
The province says effective immediately people can return to their homes in the unincorporated areas of Western Bay, Ochre Pit Cove and the remaining portion of Northern Bay.
Residents in those communities have been out of their homes since Aug. 4 because of a wildfire in the Kingston, N.L. area.
That fire, which is being held, has destroyed nearly 200 homes and structures along a 15-kilometre stretch of highway and had forced more than 2,000 people from their homes.
Meanwhile in Nova Scotia, work continues to prevent the spread of a large out-of-control wildfire in the Annapolis Valley.
The Natural Resources Department says 11 helicopters, six planes, 70 pieces of heavy equipment and 142 firefighters are working to control the Long Lake fire in the valley.
