Musician dedicates new song to wildfire fighters

Devon Hanley releases new tune inspired by her son's involvement in fighting fires

Musician Devon Hanley, raised on the North Shore, but now based in Powell River, has released a new song and video, “Fighting the Fire,” inspired by her son’s involvement in fighting wildfires for B.C. Wildfire Service over the past four summers.

“[James Southcott, 21] got his start as a junior at the Powell River Fire Initial Attack Crew in the summer of 2016 and then went on to work out of the Cultus Lake Fraser Crew unit the summers of 2017 and 2018,” Hanley says in an email. “This year he’s working in the Mackenzie B.C. Parattack Unit, jumping out of planes into lightning strike fires in northern B.C.”

Hanley recorded the song in June and released it on YouTube last weekend.

“I have heard amazing stories about what it’s like to fight wildfires across British Columbia in all types of terrain,” says Hanley. “This project is in appreciation for all those who fight the fires:
