The Andrea Superstein Ensemble perform The Not So Standards at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art (2121 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver) on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. as part of the Jazz @ The Smith series of Tuesday night cabaret concerts.
Superstein, a transplanted Montreal singer/songwriter based in North Vancouver, will be accompanied by Elizabeth Shepherd on vocals, James Meger on bass and Mark Nelson on drums. Tickets $10 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Superstein’s latest album, Worlds Apart, a mix of originals and re-imagined standards produced by Elizabeth Shepherd, was released in September, 2018. Both Superstein and Shepherd have an affinity for putting an electro-funk spin on their jazz-based material. Worlds Apart’s songs, written on the West Coast and recorded in Montreal, feature lyrics sung in English, French and Hebrew. Plus a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” Superstein's great-aunt Kitty baked the strudel for Dylan’s bar mitzvah (back in May of 1954 in Hibbing, Minnesota).
In 2020 Superstein is planning more dates locally, including Frankie’s on Jan. 16, a Lions Bay House Concert on Jan. 18 and Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver on Feb. 5.
