Ranky Tanky perform the traditional gospel tune “You Gotta Move” on their debut album released in September, 2017. They play the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this weekend including a Main Stage set before Ry Cooder on Sunday evening.
The band comes “from the South Carolina Lowcountry, where life is laced with African ways,” says their website. Rooted in Gullah culture, the “descendants of Africans captured along Africa’s rice coast,” their traditions have mixed African and New World elements into a unique Creole hybrid.
