North Vancouver’s CapU removes mask requirement from all campuses and housing

Masks will no longer be required to be worn in indoor public spaces across the university's campuses; however, the university notes some students and staff may choose to continue wearing them.

Capilano University has decided to follow the public health officer's updated COVID-19 guidelines and drop the mask requirement across all campuses, effective Friday, March 11.

As of Friday (March 11), masks are no longer mandated to be used in indoor public spaces, and Capilano University is following the provincial health officer’s order and making face coverings optional.

In a statement released Friday, the university said mask-wearing is now optional for all students, employees and visitors present on the main North Vancouver campus, kálax-ay/Sunshine Coast campus, CapU Lonsdale, student housing, and other CapU learning locations, including classrooms, common areas and office spaces where the public is being served.

“While masks are no longer required or mandated under an order as of March 11, we recognize that we all have our own risks and vulnerabilities and support everyone’s choice to wear a mask, if they feel more comfortable doing so,” the university wrote.

During the COVID-19 health update on Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry said the decision to remove a mask mandate is “grounded in science and in the data we have about what's happening in our communities for where we are right now.”

The university noted that the requirement for students living in post-secondary housing to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will be removed, effective April 8.

“As Dr. Henry has reiterated before, post-secondary institutions remain low-risk locations due to high vaccination rates and comprehensive safety measures in place,” the university wrote.

“Getting vaccinated and arranging a booster shot, staying home if feeling unwell and washing your hands are always the best things we can do to protect our own health, and the health of others.”
