Charity un-invites North Shore to black-tie ball

If you have plans this Friday night, don’t break them.

That’s the message from Hollyburn Family Services Society as the charity readies their second annual un-gala fundraiser.

Rather than holding a real black-tie ball, the “no tie, no tails” non-event allows generous North Shore residents to support the registered charity from the comfort of their couch.

Given that Hollyburn supports youth, seniors and families who live in poverty, “hosting a gala event as a fundraiser just doesn’t fit who we are or what we do,” stated a release from the organization.

So on Dec. 14 from 7 p.m. to midnight, Hollyburn Family Services is requesting North Shore residents donate their money but keep their time.

“Instead of asking you to spend your Friday night in a stiff suit or uncomfortable heels, we’re just asking you to donate a portion of what such a night might have cost you,” the invitation explained.

Discussing the event in 2017, fundraising co-ordinator Joy Hayden explained the math behind the mock gala.

Including the cost of dinner, babysitter, gala tickets, taxi, cocktails and a silent auction, a couple might shell out more than $300 for an evening out.

“And so we’re saying, just put your feet up, make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, watch a Christmas movie and make a donation,” Hayden said.

Anyone hoping to support Hollyburn can donate via canadahelps.org or by calling 604-987-8211 ext. 223.

Established in 2004, Hollyburn Family Services Society aims to assist residents facing homelessness due to “unaffordable and unavailable housing” by providing counseling and support services.

Approximately 40 per cent of Hollyburn’s budget is raised through individual and corporate donations.
