The man charged with second-degree murder in connection with Vancouver’s first homicide of 2024 may plead not guilty in the case

The body of Alexander Lo, 31, was found in a home near Vancouver’s Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue around 1 a.m. Jan. 28 after police were called.

Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested in the East Vancouver house when Lo was discovered, police said.

Kematch appeared by video before Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Jennifer Oulton on April 12.

Defence lawyer Jim Heller told Oulton that layers were in the process of trying to figure out a time frame for the case and for scheduling a preliminary hearing. Such hearings are generally held to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.

Those hearings are covered by publication bans so as to prevent tainting of a potential jury should a case go to such a trial type.
