Monkeypox vaccine appointments for first and second doses are now available through Island Health.

Mpox, as it is now called, is a viral disease that spreads through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, according to the health authority.

Cases of Mpox have been reported since May of last year in many countries where the virus does not normally spread. Vaccinations, given in two doses at 28 days apart, have been available since June 2022. It can also be given following a recognized exposure, ideally within four days.

There have been 197 cases identified in B.C. — including seven in Island Health — and other parts of Canada.

The 2022 Mpox outbreak was declared over in B.C. on Jan. 9, but BC Centre for Disease Control says on its website it is possible that the virus may be introduced through travel or spread locally. Prior infection with Mpox is expected to provide immunity, said the health authority.

Anyone who received a first dose of IMVAMUNE (Mpox) vaccine at least 28 days ago is eligible for and encouraged to receive a second dose, said Island Health. A second dose is recommended for stronger and longer protection.

People who are eligible for the vaccine can book online. Information on the disease and eligibility can be found on Island Health’s Mpox website.
