Moderate winds are expected for the rest of Friday and into Saturday in the Prince George Fire Centre, with the strongest winds in the northeast corner of the province, the B.C. Wildfire Service said Friday.

Southwest winds of 20-30 kilometres per hour with gusts of 40-60 kilometres per hour are expected east of the Rockies, while west of the Rockies is expected to see 12-25 kilometres per hour winds with gusts of 30-40 kilometres per hour today.

Saturday's forecast calls for continued winds, but not as strong as those on Friday but stronger south-westerly winds are expected to reappear on Sunday as a cold front pushes its way into the region.

With the increased winds, residents can expect to see increased smoke and activity coming from existing fires.

Area residents are encouraged to consider wind and weather conditions when having campfires in permissible areas.  A campfire is defined as an open fire that burns piled material no larger than 0.5 metres high and 0.5 metres wide.

The Prince George Fire Centre currently has three active area restrictions as well as a partial Category 1 (campfire) ban in effect for the Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Mackenzie and Fort Nelson zones.
