Heads up: Residents may be seeing a low-flying helicopter around the capital region over the next several days.

Fortis B.C. is doing annual inspections of its high-pressure transmission natural gas lines from Sooke to Sidney during daylight hours.

Transport Canada has authorized the flights by Talon Helicopters and LaSen Inc., which uses LiDaR (Light Detection and Ranging) remote sensor technology to test for leaks in the lines.

Fortis B.C. said the work is an important part of the company’s integrity management program. The information collected is used to ensure the pipeline system continues to operate safely and to plan maintenance activities.

Flyovers are being conducted in 24 regions across the province until June 14. Flight schedules may vary depending on weather conditions and wildfires, said the gas utility.
