Majority of North Shore residents want amalgamation: poll

Only 17 per cent say two North Vancouver are better than one

Condo towers rise out of central Lonsdale in the City of North Vancouver. A new polls shows the majority of residents favour amalgamating the city and district of North Vancouver into one.

The "A word" seems to come up every few years and it appears North Shore residents are keen to talk about it again.

North Shore News polled 2,238 readers and asked the question: Should the two North Vancouvers be amalgamated?

The poll ran from Nov. 3 to Nov. 16. Of the 2,238 votes, we can determine that 1,040 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes, having two North Vans does not make sense. 62.60 % local, 62.51 % total

In general, District of North Vancouver residents tend to favour amalgamation while the City of North Vancouver, which was carved out of the district in 1907, has been adamantly opposed. The poll, like make North Vancouver residents, does not distinguish between the city and district.

In 2018, a polling firm hired by the district found 87 per cent of North Vancouver residents favoured investigating the costs and benefits of amalgamation.

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers who are located in North and West Vancouver. The margin of error – which measures sample variability – is +/- 2.06%, 19 times out of 20.
