More campaign signs for the upcoming municipal election have been stolen in Richmond – this time from a candidate’s doorstep.
Around 15 to 20 signs for the Richmond Citizens’ Association (RCA) were taken last Wednesday night from the home of city council candidate Jack Trovato.
And to make matters worse, the signs were taken from the doorstep of where Trovato’s 87-year-old father lives.
Suffice to say, Trovato is concerned about the incident and the fact that someone came so close to where his elderly relative resides.
“I have had problems with signs in other elections, but this is the first time they have come onto my property to steal several signs earmarked for our supporters,” said Trovato, who has reported the theft to the RCMP.
“The signs and wire stands were stored outside the lower level front door, where my 87-year-old father lives.
“Naturally, he is distraught by this and is worried about intruders, and further theft or vandalism to our home.”
Where will the stolen signs end up?
Trovato is also concerned about what the thief may do with the stolen signs, suggesting that the signs may end up in an inappropriate location.
RCA president Colleen Glynn said the slate has had problems with signs being pulled down or defaced in the past “but this is the first time someone has actually gone onto the property of one of our candidates to steal a number of signs.
“I suspect the thief is planning to place these signs in some inappropriate space, which has also happened before.
“Signs and stands are expensive and our campaign is run on a shoestring as it is. I am appalled that someone would do this.”
The Richmond News reported last week how a campaign sign for city council candidate Adil Awan was stolen from a fence on private property.
