New month, new phase in B.C.'s restart plan, and lots of great opportunities to get out and enjoy delicious food and drink in and around Vancouver.
"Events" still seems like a bit of a naughty word, so for the most part we are still talking about specials, pop-ups, collabs, cool happenings going on in the local food scene to put on your July 2021 eating calendar. You have an eating calendar, right?
Starting July 1, restaurants in the province are no longer subject to the longstanding public health orders in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the six-person cap on how many people are seated at one table. That said, not all restaurants have - or may want to - ditch their current safety protocols. Others may increase capacity and have new safety plans approved by WorkSafeBC. You may still be asked to wear a mask inside a business; while the province's order on masks has been lifted, it is at a business' discretion to continue to require one. Socializing between tables is not permitted. Wash your hands, be patient, and pack a mask with you.

Lobster Festival Menu at Provence Marinaside
When: July 2021
Provence Marinaside presents its annual Lobster Festival Menu – this year paired with wines from award-winning Tantalus Vineyards in the Okanagan. A collaboration between Executive Chef/Owner Jean-Francis Quaglia and Provence's talented kitchen brigade, this special two-course dinner is value-priced at $72. Wine Director Joshua Carlson has thoughtfully paired wines from Tantalus to complement each dish. The optional pairing is available as a regular or petit pour. If guests don’t wish to have the full pairing, wines may be purchased individually by the glass or the bottle. Dishes on the menu include Lobster Bisque and Basque-Style Roasted Lobster.
New plant-based kits launch at Burgerland Smash-Up
When: Starting July 1
You can now order all four of Burgerland's current Smashburger kits with Impossible Burger "smashballs" with either the regular toppings and components (like "secret sauce," American cheese slices, and Martin's Famous potato rolls in the In-N-Out inspired California Up-N-Down) or totally plant-based toppings and components (like a vegan "secret sauce," Chao slices, and La Baguette buns for the same kit). Burgerland Smash Up launched this spring and sells perfect bundles for sizzling up perfectly crispy-juicy smashed beef patties paired up with toppings inspired by burger classics. All the kits contain what you need to make four burgers (though you supply the "smash" muscle and the pan or griddle) and cost $39.99. Pick up or delivery in Vancouver is available.
National Ice Cream Day Week with YVR Cookie
When: July 18-22
To mark "National Ice Cream Day" (July 18), local treat-maker YVR Cookie will be doing a week of ice cream pairings and giveaways on their Instagram. Each day they will featuring a local ice creamery and pairing it with one of their cookies in the form of ice cream sundaes. Plus every day they'll be giving away a gift card for the featured ice creamery and a box of their decadent cookies.
First anniversary menu at Straight and Marrow
When: July 29-August 1
East Vancouver neighbourhood eatery and late-night haunt Straight and Marrow is celebrating its first anniversary this month by offering a limited-edition menu from Thursday, July 29 to Sunday, August 1 showcasing feature dishes and staff favourites from the past year.
Weekend summer features at Popina Cantina
When: Thursday to Sunday in July and August
The four culinary musketeers of Popina celebrate their third anniversary on Granville Island with a slate of signature weekend features. Angus An, Robert Belcham, Hamid Salimian, and Joël Watanabe will step up to the plate on weekends through July and August and create unique dishes inspired by favourite food memories from their childhood summers. Each chef takes a turn for one-on-one mentorship with the Popina kitchen team, teaching them new techniques and exposing them to a new palette of international flavours. Live Music Happy Hour at Kafka's Great Northern Way
When: Fridays and Saturdays in July and August from 3-5 p.m.
Kafka’s is offering a new lineup of weekly Friday and Saturday happy-hour concerts at its Great Northern Way location from 3 to 5 p.m. throughout July and August. Curated by co-artistic director of the Vancouver World Music Festival, Robin Layne, this free series of all-ages outdoor shows celebrates the sounds of summer with an eclectic mix of jazz, world, and roots music. Guests can nosh on the patio and raise a glass to the weekend with craft beer, cider, and BC wine; fully licensed, Kafka’s offers selections from 33 Acres, Brassneck, Mission Hill and Cedar Creek. The parking lot will be cordoned off and car-free during all performances, maximizing space for the community to gather safely outdoors. Kafka’s (120-577 Great Northern Way) livens things up further by extending Happy Hour—when beer and wine are on offer for $6—to coincide with the performances.
Free TikTok Pancake Cereal Sundaes at Welcome Parlour
When: July 16-18 and July 23-25 (while supplies last) from noon-10 p.m.
To help get Canadians out to celebrate the season, TikTok is launching Summer Starts on TikTok, bringing trends on the app to life, starting with "Pancake Cereal." Vancouverites will a chance to try their own pancake cereal sundae from their favourite local ice cream shop for free. Locally, they'll be handing out the treats at Welcome Parlour (25 Victory Ship Way #126) in North Van.
Coho Collective's Street Food Series
When: Saturday, July 24 from 4-8 p.m.
Authentic Spanish cuisine food truck Boca’O is heating up Coho Collective's third summer Street Food Series, teaming up with Coho Coffee (1370 E Georgia Street). The menu includes a charcuterie platter, Burger “La Manchega”, Seafood Paella, Crema Catalana for dessert, and thirst quenching drinks such as housemade sangria, beers, kombucha, and lemonade.

As B.C. has moved into Step 3 of the "Restart Plan," the Richmond Night Market has revealed they will be going ahead with a summer 2021 event. "We are excited to announce that the Richmond Night Market will be returned in mid July," shared the popular food and fun event on its Facebook page. THey've since revealed they'll kick off the season July 23.
Afternoon 'Tea in the Window' at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
When: Monday through Friday, one seating for 2 offered at 2 p.m. during summer 2021
A quirky offering from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver that debuted in the summer of 2019, the historic venue's restaurant Notch8 has now resumed serving its signature Afternoon Tea to a table for two located inside a street-level display window on West Georgia Street. The limited tea service will be available throughout the summer and is weather-dependent. The experience requires guests to climb four small steps. The window space has been styled with custom art created by Vancouver-based fashion illustrator Mandy Lau, who drew inspiration from the social aspect of afternoon tea as well as the notion of putting an exterior street scene in an interior space. $69 per adult, $34.50 per child (12 and under). Sunday Seafood Boils at Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar
When: July 18 - August 22
This multi-course weekly summertime dinner begins as guests are welcomed with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. To follow, a starter Caesar salad of locally-sourced greens from Zaklan Heritage Farm. The main event, a show-stopping seafood boil, comes loaded with lobster, jumbo prawns, clams, mussels, Dungeness crab, potatoes, and corn, all laid out on the table covered in butcher's paper. The components of the boil are tossed in Ma's Boom Bang Sauce, a secret concoction of Cajun spices that give the boil an authentic and vibrant Southern flavour profile. A spicy New Orleans-style remoulade and a green goddess sauce loaded with fresh herbs are both perfect for dipping. A skillet of Boulevard's much-loved cornbread accompanies the seafood feast. For dessert, Pastry Chef Kenta Takahashi gives a Southern staple a B.C. spin: freshly made beignets served with blueberry compote and lavender ice cream.
The series will run for six Sundays starting on July 18; seating time will be 6 p.m. The dinner experience is available for $72.00 per person. Tickets can be purchased in sets of 4 or 6 on TOCK, each set of tickets will be seated as an individual group.
Oakridge x Pac Rim Pop-Up Patio at Fairmont Pacific Rim
When: Wednesdays through Sundays, noon to 8 p.m. in the summer
Fairmont Pacific Rim has partnered with Oakridge and Westbank, to offer a unique outdoor pop-up patio experience this summer. The hotel plaza reflects the design for the 10-acre park at Oakridge Park, inspired in equal parts by the rice terraces of Southeast Asia and the coastal temperate rainforests of British Columbia. The grassy patio is defined by distinct, carved hills creating topographic forms, with more than 50 seats, accented by individual fire pits, lounge areas, and umbrella-topped tables. Fairmont Pacific Rim’s new food truck stands centre stage, serving a playful menu of appetizers to mains with ever-changing desserts. There's also live music select times!
Backyard Cookouts at The Boxcar
When: Monday nights in summer
Tacofino and The Boxcar are having a weekly Backyard Cookout every Monday that will find popular local chefs and restaurants running out of the Tacofino truck at the Main Street bar. The pop-up will be taking place all summer long. 19+ only.
Mijune Pak x Buttermere Patisserie Chouxpi Collection
When: Through July 11
Vancouver-based food personality Mijune Pak has teamed up with forward-thinking pastry chef and owner of Buttermere Patisserie Jamie Tung to launch a playful, travel-inspired French confection collection. Fondly named Chouxpi, pronounced “shoo-P”, the duo’s whimsical creation features pâte à choux pastries filled with a rich pastry cream garnished with crunchy crumb topping. The six flavours are: horchata speculoos, Vietnamese egg coffee, guava passion fruit, Hong Kong milk tea, cereal milk, and classic vanilla bean three ways. The #MijunexButtermere Chouxpi collection is available for pre-order online for pick-up in-store at Buttermere Café (636 Main Street) every Wednesday to Sunday through July 11.
D6 Bar & Lounge Loooong Weekend
When: July 1-4
To mark the venue’s exciting summer kickoff, D6 is hosting a ‘Loooong Weekend’ series from Thursday, July 1 to Sunday, July 4. The multi-day series will feature four thematic concept events over the course of the long weekend giving guests multiple opportunities to enjoy their new all-day menu, food and drink specials, giveaways, and performances by live DJs and local artists. The teams at Juke Fried Chicken and DL Chicken Shack are joining forces for an exclusive, three-day ‘Juke’N on the DL’ collaboration at Steel & Oak Brewing in News Westminster (1319 3rd Ave). The Juke’N on the DL Fried Chicken Sando features a Rossdown Chicken thigh dredged with Juke’s gluten-free batter, DL Slaw and pickles and Juke BBQ sauce sandwiched between a Livia potato bun. Fried Chicken lovers will have a choice of dressing their chicken in DL’s signature Hot Chicken Spice Dust (mild, medium, hot, extra hot) or Juke’s trademark Spicy Boyz sauce.
