Pipers win third straight AAA Lower Mainland title

Argyle on top in what could be the last Crehan Cup tournament

The Argyle Pipers senior girls will topped the R.A. McMath Wildcats Saturday to win the Lower Mainland AAA basketball title in what may be the final Crehan Cup ever played.

The Pipers ripped off a 24-5 fourth quarter Saturday at Lord Byng Secondary to blow open a close game and pull away for an 88-67 win. Tournament MVP Holly Brewer caught fire in the final, hitting nine three pointers on her way to 32 points. Argyle’s Camie Ward and Ella Mellinghaus earned tournament all-star status, as did Handsworth’s Julia Strigl.

The Crehan Cup tournament has long been held to crown a Lower Mainland AAA champion, but things will look much different next year when the province adopts a new tiering system. Argyle’s win earned them an automatic berth into the provincial championships, while Handsworth’s fifth-place showing sent them into a wild card qualifier Feb. 19.
