North Vancouver's Indigo Diaz picked in MLB draft

North Vancouver’s Indigo Diaz was selected in the MLB draft held earlier this month, getting picked in the 27 th round by Atlanta.

North Vancouver’s Indigo Diaz was selected in the MLB draft held earlier this month, getting picked in the 27th round by Atlanta. 

The 6-5, 250-pound right-handed pitcher spent the last season as a junior with the NCAA’s Michigan State Spartans, striking out 50 batters in 42 innings with a 5.91 ERA. He became the team's closer partway through the season and picked up seven saves in regular season play. As a reliever he struck out 31 batters in 21 appearances. he did not allow a run in 16 of those relief appearances, including a stretch of 13 in a row.

The former Forest Hills Little League player also suited up for the North Shore Twins and Coquitlam Reds organizations. Before going to Michigan State Diaz pitched two seasons of college ball at Iowa Western. He put together a dominant season in 2018-18, going 11-1 in 12 starts with 101 strikeouts and a 1.52 ERA in 65 innings.
