The North Shore Sport Awards ceremony and accompanying North Shore Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for tonight have been postponed due to coronavirus concerns.

“The event celebrates those who excel in all levels of sport including athletes of all ages and abilities, coaches and volunteers,” stated organizing committee member Ron Holbrook in a release. “We look forward to rescheduling the event at a later date and honouring the amazing accomplishments of North Shore residents in sport.”

The Sport Awards is an annual event meant to celebrate the achievements of members of the North Shore sports community in a gathering at the West Vancouver Community Centre. Last year the program was expanded to include the first class of North Shore Sports Hall of Fame inductees since the Hall went dormant in 1971. This year’s Hall of Fame class includes tennis star Grant Connell, Olympic diver Blythe Hartley, baseball coach Dave Empey, basketball coach Kathy Shields and football player Jerome Pathon, along with the 1938 North Shore United soccer team.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia’s top medical health officer, has urged B.C. residents to avoid large gatherings to lower the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus.
