Dear editor:

Say it ain’t so.

I was sad for happy reasons to read Trevor Lautens’ announcement of his retirement.

Trevor almost never wrote the columns I wished he’d write. When I served as a member of Parliament, I had about a one in 10 success rate in trying to get him to write about things I thought were important in our community.

Still, he always listened, reported professionally, added humour to his acerbity, and drew me to read every column of his that came across my desk.

I don’t know Trevor’s age but do know it would surprise me. It’s up there. He’s a testimony to the great idiom that good people don’t get older; they get better.

Like all good maestros, Trevor, you deserve an encore. I’m guessing other readers agree, and hope your editors will bring you back for special occasions – and even not-so-special ones.

Four more years!
