A curling rink is not a better choice than a skating rink

Dear Editor:

Re: 50-Metre Pool in Rec Centre Plans, March 14 front-page story.

It is extremely disappointing to see that North Vancouver council chose curling instead of an ice skating rink in the future Harry Jerome project.

Democracy is not served when council chooses to spend millions of dollars for a miniscule minority of tax payers just because Coun. Holly Back whimsically feels that although curling is dead it may return some day.

There is absolutely no evidence that curling will make a comeback. If a curling rink is built we will be building for the past and not the future. How about surveying North Vancouver citizens and asking them, “Would you prefer curling or would you prefer ice skating and hockey?”

Clearly an overwhelming majority would choose an ice skating arena. A trip to the very busy ice skating arena in the current Harry Jerome to see all the families with young children skating will show what will be missed if the new centre fails to include ice skating.
