LETTER: Why should teachers get special housing treatment?

Dear editor: I think your editorial on subsidized housing ( Sentenced To Commute, Feb. 7 ) rather missed the point. The main issue was the selection of teachers as the sole beneficiaries of the proposed scheme.

Dear editor:

I think your editorial on subsidized housing (Sentenced To Commute, Feb. 7) rather missed the point. The main issue was the selection of teachers as the sole beneficiaries of the proposed scheme.

Why not nurses, some of whom travel from Squamish and the Fraser Valley? Why not tradesmen? Why not all workers who have to commute from outside the area? All these people would complement the community as wished for in the editorial’s final paragraph.
The two main concerns on the North Shore are affordable housing and traffic. It would be better to address these as specific problems affecting everyone including residents and commuters rather than applying a demographically restricted short term band aid solution.
