Letter: Sound advice and kudos for the Class of 2021

An open letter to 2021 grads:

Congratulations on your achievements. What you learned about teamwork, dedication and persistence can be applied going forward in other aspects of life to achieve your goals and to contribute to society through work, groups or clubs.

Ask questions to understand, and share tips to help others. Support people where they are. Remember that everyone has different challenges.

Learn to love yourself and to follow your instincts for good outcomes. While your situation may not be perfect along the way, life is a stepping stone with each step as a learning experience to the next step.

An idea starts with one person. Be a responsible citizen. Each person matters.  Every individual impacts the community.  And, as we have heard during this pandemic, continue to “be kind, be calm and be safe.”

Dear Editor:

My granddaughter was one of this year’s graduates from Handsworth Secondary. We were on Sunset Boulevard to watch the car parade, what a wonderful thing that was, all the young people waving and smiling from the cars. The decorations and spirit that went into this was terrific and I loved every minute of it.

It was very well organized and, according to my son, who was driving, the entire parade route was lined with people, blue and gold, the school colours were everywhere and all kinds of signs were being waved by the spectators.

It was a real community event and I would hope that it will be continued after the pandemic is over. It is so nice for all the neighbours to be able to participate in an important occasion in the young people’s lives which doesn’t happen if everything is kept to school boundaries.
