Dear Editor:

I have moved to North Vancouver from Downtown Vancouver and I am appalled by the audacity of the North Shore residents and their willingness to go out of their way to ensure someone smoking feels shamed. I do not smoke in my flat, I do not stand on the sidewalks and smoke, I do not walk and smoke. I have tried my best to ensure the public does not inhale cigarette smoke unless they willingly choose to.

But I have seen people cross the street, walk out of their way to come up to me and tell me what a disgrace I am.

Smoking is my choice and I have tried my best to be respectful of others that choose not to. The way the North Vancouver community has treated me is unwelcoming and making me seriously consider moving elsewhere.

I do love my garden plot here, my job and the quaint community of shops and businesses which I love to support. But being outright shamed whenever I leave my house has really left me with a loss of hope for this community that I once really did love.

My hope is that people could just realize that I have made my own life decisions and go out of my way to ensure that they do not affect others’ lives and that the North Shore community could do the same for me.
