Dear Editor:

A big thank you to the four brave men and women of the North Vancouver RCMP who did an outstanding job apprehending a violent and aggressive man outside McDonald’s restaurant at Lonsdale Quay (on Dec. 18). They showed poise and restraint that was both reassuring and calming in the face of extreme danger to themselves and many patrons of the SeaBus and Lonsdale Quay.

My wife and I were on the way to a Canucks’ game when three squad cars came rushing onto the scene of a man sitting on the ground outside the McDonald’s, hurtling insults and threats to people walking by. As soon as the police arrived he turned his threats and aggression toward them. They spent 10 minutes or more reasoning with him and doing their very best to de-escalate a volatile situation.

The man then got to his feet and rushed toward the officers with his fists raised, cursing them the whole way. One officer drew his taser and fired to little effect because of the amount of clothing the young man was wearing. The officer calmly walked around behind him and fired a second shot under his arm, which allowed the other three to move in for the arrest.

It was a fine display of our brave police in action, which I am thankful for every day. Bravo, RCMP and the brave men and women who serve our communities often with little thanks and much aggression toward them.

We do appreciate everything you do and putting your lives in harm’s way.
